NETS T1: Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity
In today's society, technology has become almost a must. For students to succeed to their highest potential it is crucial that they know how to use technology and the information that it holds. Growing up, books and people were the resources that we had to use, but now student's can "Google" just about anything. This can be a good thing but it can also turn into a negative. Part of my job is teaching student's how to explore the technology that they can access but also teach them the responsibilities and expectations that come along with using technology.
Technology will be a major factor in my classroom. As a teacher, it is my job to push students past their comfort levels so they reach new levels and capabilities that they weren't aware they had. "We must integrate technology into our classroom so that we can teach our students to be lifelong learners," said Noe Granado, a professor at the University of Texas Brownsville. He is exactly right! Technology is becoming more and more frequent in everyday life, and it will get to a point that it is essential to be able technologically proficient. That is why incorporating technology into my classroom will set my student's up for the real world that they will step into some day.
There are many different ways you can incorporate technology into a classroom, but the easiest way to do that, in my opinion, would be using a type of technology that most students have access too. A cellphone! Marc Prensky stated that 85% of middle school students own a cell phone. That is an incredible amount! Back in the day student's always got in trouble for having their phone at school but why not switch gears and utilize a tool that they already own, in an educational way.
As said before, technology is becoming more and more frequent in a student's life, and children are also being exposed to technology at earlier ages. This is not a bad thing, but one thing that comes with technology is responsibility and safety. As a teacher, I will model and demonstrate how student's need to be model good digital age citizenship. This will include teaching them about citing sources and being a safe internet user.
Although technology is a major part in today's society, not everything can be done using technology. All students prefer different learning techniques, and some might like the technology portion of class great, while others may not. The good thing about technology, is there are so many different ways to do one thing, so if you look enough you can almost always find a way to meet all of your learners' needs. Using technology to get my students excited about school is my main goal but also meeting all of their individual needs.
